The 90's LT1 one piece seal engines (all small blocks from 1986 and up) are all externally balanced. You can't bolt an early two piece seal flywheel on to a later one piece seal block due to different diameter flywheel bolt pattern. But on EXternal balance engines (400-454) there will be (or should be) a dowel pin in the crankshaft flange which fits into the 7th hole in the flywheel/flexplate for indexing to achieve proper balancing.
